A San Gabriel Mountains National Recreation Area would preserve existing recreational opportunities while better protecting forest open space and adding sorely needed new resources like signs and visitor services. It could also link millions of nearby residents to the mountains through a series of interconnected parks and trails.
But if this National Recreation Area proposal is to have any chance of becoming a reality, your voices must be heard by the National Park Service at its Oct. 28 public meeting in Tujunga. San Gabriel Mountains Forever volunteers will be available to give you recommended comments beginning at 6:30 p.m. as well as an "Our Kids Need an NRA!" lapel sticker. The National Park Service resources study team will be making a presentation at 7 p.m. sharp, followed by a Q & A period and a chance for public comment.
At five public meetings in September, hundreds of volunteers, community leaders and concerned citizens have already expressed their overwhelming support for this proposal – which is similar to the successful Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. If this visionary concept is approved for the San Gabriel Mountains, additional rangers, law enforcement personnel and improved interpretive services could be added.
A Congressionally-mandated study team has been working for two years to draft a range of alternative proposals for the San Gabriel Mountains which include the newly conceived National Recreation Area. The study results will eventually be submitted to Congress for action after the study is revised based on public input and suggestions. This study area includes most of the San Gabriel Mountains and cities south from Glendora to Whittier and El Monte. Visit: http://www.nps.gov/pwro/sangabriel/ for more details.
